Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works this year celebrated the family’s 100th year of boatbuilding, a tradition that began at the start of World War I when Roy Merritt’s grandfather went to work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a carpenter building oceangoing merchant marine vessels. By 1929 the family was living in Florida, where Franklin LeRoy Merritt built his first sportfisherman for charter off Fort Lauderdale.
